Games based around the theme of War are mostly developed around one of two genres; strategy, or stealth. There aren’t a great number of games that can provide, or indeed let you choose either approach to the game’s objectives. Spec Ops (or Special Operations) manages to give players the freedom to tackle the situation given as they wish. The game’s entirety is shown in a third-person mode of play, which gives it a little distance from the Doom genre, but also allows for a wider field of vision. After starting the game, you may well be forgiven for thinking that this is all a little too easy. However, a learning curve has been crafted into place, and as you progress, the previously sparse environments soon turn into blood stained battlefields. You’re not expected to go the distance unaided, of course. A whole bestiary of gadgetry and weaponry has been sent to you to use at your disposal. The most significant downside to Spec Ops is the game’s PC specification requirements. Be warned, if you don’t have 3Dfx graphics accelerator, you will not be able realise Spec Ops’ graphical potential. If you are one of the lucky owners of 3Dfx card, then you will be treated to some lovely textured environments and lighting effects.
